Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

Students must acquire knowledge about the mechanism of action of drugs , pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile, major interactions, side effects, indications and contraindications.
Develop skills that allow to:

  • Make the selection and dispensing of drugs
  • Interpret and evaluate medical prescriptions
  • Follow up the use of drugs
  • Provide correct information on drugs to health professionals and patients in order to promote its correct use
  • Integrate knowledge, deal with complex issues and solve problems in new situations
  • Develop research, interpretation and synthesis skills
  • Develop written and oral communication of scientific content and teamwork
  • Communicate knowledge, arguments and conclusions clearly and unambiguously
  • Make a lifelong self-directed and autonomous learning

  1. DRUGS THAT ACT ON THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM 
    Bronchodilators
    Antitussives and expectorants
  2. DRUGS THAT ACT ON THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM
    Antacids
    Anti-secreting stomach
    Protectors of the stomach lining
    Antidiarrheal drugs and laxatives
  3. DRUGS THAT ACT ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM 
    Antipsychotics
    Antiparkinsonian drugs
    Anticonvulsants
    Anxiolytics. Hypnotics
    Antidepressants
    Central action analgesics and their antagonists
  4. DRUGS THAT ACT ON THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM 
    Drugs containing estrogens, progestins, androgens
    Corticosteroids
    Insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs
  5. DRUGS USED IN CHEMOTHERAPY
In each pharmacological group will addressed the following aspects:
  • Main drugs of each group
  • Mechanism of action
  • Main pharmacokinetic characteristics
  • Main indications and contraindications
  • Adverse effects
  • Drug interactions
