Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
At the end of the CU the student should be able to:
- To know the essential themes of the practice of Physiotherapy in community health, including: the role of Physiotherapy in the community, the conceptual models of assessment and intervention and the possibilities of developing health promoting materials.
- Develop community-based counselling and rehabilitation skills, being able to select, adapt, apply, monitor and assess appropriate strategies for people with altered health states.
- Recognize psychological, cultural, socioeconomic and ethical influences in community health.
- Be able to develop a counselling/rehabilitation project in a community health area relevant to Physiotherapy.
Syllabus:
- Community health issues in Physiotherapy practice: role of physiotherapy in the community, models of rehabilitation, models of community-based practice, community Physiotherapy services.
- Counselling and rehabilitation skills in Physiotherapy: key dimensions of a helpful therapeutic relationship; structured and person-centered counselling; basic strategies in identifying problems; counselling stages; assessment of the effectiveness of counselling; functional rehabilitation, psychological rehabilitation and integrative global rehabilitation; community social support; counselling and rehabilitation specificities in different clinical conditions (neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, oncological and rheumatic diseases).
- Psychological, cultural, socioeconomic and ethical influences in community health.
- Counselling/rehabilitation projects in community health: identification of individual, group and community needs; strategies for facilitating behavioral changes; health promotion materials relevant for physiotherapy; the new technologies as a health education resource.
