Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Understand the physical principles of water.
  • Identify the physiological changes resulting from exercise in the aquatic environment.
  • Identify the precautions and contraindications of immersion and water exercises.
  • Characterize the clinical decision process in the elaboration of an aquatic exercise program.
  • Elaborate group programs of intervention in Physiotherapy adapted to several clinical conditions.
  • Understand the principles of the Maitland concept.
  • Develop the process of clinical reasoning according to Maitland's evaluation.
  • Identify indications and contraindications.

Lectures:

Aquatic Physiotherapy:
  1. The effects of the aquatic environment.
  2. Physical Principles and Water Properties.
  3. Physiological Immersion Effects in Different Systems.
  4. Functional and Structural Aspects of a Swimming Pool for Therapeutic Purposes.
  5. Introduction to physical therapy exercises in aquatic environment.
  6. Contraindications.
  7. Precautions.
  8. Aquatic physiotherapy in different clinical conditions.
  9. Assessment instruments in Aquatic Physiotherapy.
  10. Introduction to the Halliwick Method.
  11. Organization of group sessions.
Maitland Concept:
  1. Introduction to the Maitland Concept.
  2. Mobilization and manipulation.
  3. Evaluation.
  4. Intervention.

Lab Practice Classes:

  1.  Planning and prescription of aquatic exercise.
  2.  Strengthening exercises using water properties
  3.  Exercises to increase ROM using water properties
  4.  Stretching exercises using water properties
  5.  Introduction to the Halliwick Method
