Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Identify the Bobath concept, analyzing its theoretical principals and key aspects of clinical practice.
  • Perform normal movement facilitation using the key points of motor control.
  • Recognize the importance of normal movement in physiotherapy treatment of neurological patients.
  • Apply movement facilitation using motor control key points.
  • Describe and analyze the constraint induced movement therapy, identify its applicability, benefits and limitations in hemiparetic persons.
  • Describe and analyze the Motor Relearning Program. Identify its objectives a and application of this approach for treatment of hemiparetic persons.
  • Describe and analyze the Mirror Therapy in persons with neurological dysfunction.
  • Analyze the Virtual Reality as a new physiotherapy approach in people with neurological impairments.
  • Analyze Motor Restraint in Physiotherapy treatment of hemiparetic upper limb.
  • Understand Motor imagery and its application in physiotherapy treatment for persons with neurological disorders.
  • Analyze sequential tasks and dual tasks.
  • Define and explain the physiotherapy treatment goals in each pathology, describe the treatment plan and explain the treatment choices.
  • Discuss the benefits and limitations of the several therapies, based on the scientific evidence.
Syllabus:
  1. Introduction to Normal Movement, components and importance to physiotherapy applied to neurological patients.
  2. The Bobath Concept.
  3. Constraint induced Movement Therapy.
  4. Motor Relearning Program.
  5. Mirror Therapy in neurological physiotherapy.
  6. Virtual reality in neurological physiotherapy.
  7. Motor Imagery, concept and its use in neurological patient’s recovery.
  8. Motor restraint in patients with neurological disorders.
  9. Sequential Task and Dual Task.
  10. Physiotherapy in neurological disorders, including cerebrovascular diseases, neuromuscular diseases, brain injury and spinal cord injury.
