Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

The purpose of the curricular unit is to enable students to know the general concepts and the main legislation of Safety, Hygiene and Health at Work, as well as a reflection about the role of the Nurse in the Occupational Health team.

At the end of the curricular unit student should be able to:

  • Explain the relevance of occupational health for workers and particularly for health-care workers (HCWs).
  • Establish rules and routines that minimize occupational hazards and that promote biosecurity in Health Care, aiming the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases.
  • Use correctly the personal protective equipment.
  • Disseminate implementation strategies of universal precautions.
  • Understand the reasons for maintaining and promoting good standards of hygiene, health and safety at the workplace, contributing to reduce the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms in patients and HCWs.
Syllabus:
  1. Concepts of Hygiene, Health and Safety at Work; Legislation.
  2. Accidents at work and occupational diseases.
  3. Medicine and Occupational Health Nursing; The Worker as a user - evaluation of surveillance Health.
  4. Fields of action and functions of Nurse Labour in the Labour health team.
  5. Identification of hazards in the workplace.
  6. Assessment of the occupational risks; Main control methods for eliminating /reducing risks.
  7. Ergonomics at work.
  8. Infectious agents and health.
  9. Importance of the CDC recommendations for the control of infection; Universal precautions.
  10. The cross-infection and the health work places / health-care workers.
  11. Importance of the existence of infection control programs.
  12. Biosafety; Collective and personal protection measures; Individual postures of prevention.
  13. Signalling Security.
  14. Decontamination of the material and of the environment.
  15. Safe handling and storage of hospital waste.
