Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Introduction to the study of the cell. Understanding the cellular and molecular fundamentals inherent to the formation of the animal organism.
  • Learning of the cellular and molecular pathways inherent to the processes of fertilization, segmentation, gastrulation and organogenesis.
  • General fundamentals of structural biochemistry inherent to the functioning of the animal organism.
Syllabus:
  1. The concept of the animal cell. Somatic cells versus gametes
  2. Relationship between cell architecture and cell biochemistry
  3. Big decisions in development: Mitosis or Meiosis. Sperm or oocyte?
  4. Fertilization Processes. Embryogenesis - segmentation, gastrulation. Formation of embryonic leaflets - ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm - and fate in the animal organism
  5. Gastrulation in fish, birds and mammals.
  6. Development of the germinative layers: Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm.
  7. Establishing the body axis in mammals and birds.
  8. Biochemistry Fundamentals: structure and properties of water; structure of amino acids, peptides and proteins; protein function; enzymes and enzymatic kinetics; carbohydrate structure; lipid structure
  9. Constitution of biological membranes and transport of molecules.
  10. Microscopic observation: animal cells, gametes, fertilization, embryonic development.
  11. Basic laboratory techniques: electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. Separation of blood serum proteins by electrophoresis.
