Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
- Introduction to the study of the cell. Understanding the cellular and molecular fundamentals inherent to the formation of the animal organism.
- Learning of the cellular and molecular pathways inherent to the processes of fertilization, segmentation, gastrulation and organogenesis.
- General fundamentals of structural biochemistry inherent to the functioning of the animal organism.
Syllabus:
- The concept of the animal cell. Somatic cells versus gametes
- Relationship between cell architecture and cell biochemistry
- Big decisions in development: Mitosis or Meiosis. Sperm or oocyte?
- Fertilization Processes. Embryogenesis - segmentation, gastrulation. Formation of embryonic leaflets - ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm - and fate in the animal organism
- Gastrulation in fish, birds and mammals.
- Development of the germinative layers: Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm.
- Establishing the body axis in mammals and birds.
- Biochemistry Fundamentals: structure and properties of water; structure of amino acids, peptides and proteins; protein function; enzymes and enzymatic kinetics; carbohydrate structure; lipid structure
- Constitution of biological membranes and transport of molecules.
- Microscopic observation: animal cells, gametes, fertilization, embryonic development.
- Basic laboratory techniques: electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. Separation of blood serum proteins by electrophoresis.
