Occlusion and TMA2

Oclusão e ATM

Course code:9791113

João Miguel Rua Gonçalves

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

The aim of this course is to present the general application of TMJ and Occlusion in Prosthodontics. It is interconnected with other disciplines of the degree, giving students the opportunity to experience other techniques and materials applications in oral rehabilitation.
At the end, the student must be capable to generally:

  • Understand the concept masticatory organ.
  • Understand the functional biomechanics of the masticatory organ complex and all its components.

Instrumental Skills

  • Evaluate and understand the relationship of different occlusal contacts, inherent biomechanics of mandibular movement.
  • Know what are articulators and what their use in multiple applications. Making model assembly, use maxillo-mandibular bite records for this function.
  • Learn to define and characterize the types of dental occlusion.
  • Know what are temporo-mandibular disorders and orthopedic devices (splints) most commonly used in some treatments.
Syllabus:
  1. The TMJ and masticatory organ concept.
  2. Evolutionary aspects: vertical posture, speech and mind.
  3. Ontogeny and phylogeny. Functional periods of the deciduous dentition.
  4. Ontogenesis. Functional mixed dentition periods. Definitive teeth.
  5. Functional areas of occlusion.
  6. Plans and compensation curves.
  7. Functional lines of the arches.
  8. Concepts of Occlusion.
  9. Compensation mechanisms.
  10. Vertical dimension.
  11. Normal teeth and malocclusions.
  12. Kinematics of mandibular biomechanics.
  13. The different joint movements.
  14. Articulators and its importance in clinical and laboratory practice.
  15. Instrumental functional analysis.
  16. Pain and temporomandibular dysfunction.
  17. Approach and treatment of TMD: Splints.
  18. Bruxism and stress in oral rehabilitation.
