Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
With this curricular unit, “Non-prescription Medicines” (NPM) the student should apprehend the professional pharmaceutical practice dedicated to the rational use of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, promoting their adequate, effective, safe and economical use, by patients. To perform these functions with competence the pharmacist must have a responsible performance when dealing with medicines, and master all necessary knowledge and skills necessary for their correct use.
NPM aims to provide knowledge that will allow the student to: evaluate drug related needs, and recognize situations that can be treated with auto-medication, optimizing its results. Furthermore, students practice in giving the best technical advice and scientific reasoning, in the most common therapies performed by patients.

- Introduction
- Pharmacy consultation in OTC
- Skin, hair and nail disorders: Infectious diseases, Acne, Dermatitis, Cutaneous hyperproliferative diseases, Insect bites and stings, Baldness
- Common eye conditions
- Respiratory superior tract: Infectious diseases, allergic rhinitis
- Respiratory inferior tract: Influenza, Cough
- Gastrointestinal tract: Stomach and oesophagus diseases, Intestine and rectum diseases
- Pain and inflammation: Pain therapies, Musculoskeletal lesions
- Central nervous system: Headaches, Insomnia, Smoking cessation
- Women disorders: Genitourinary tract, Emergency contraception
- Childhood disorders
- Oral Health
