Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Provide information on advanced techniques applied to the study of the human genome, proteome and transcriptome.
  • Understand how the dysregulation of gene expression can cause human disease.
  • Provide advanced concepts about human genetics and heredity and on population and evolutionary genetics.
  • Characterize the human genetic susceptibility to infectious diseases and the molecular biology of some human diseases including cancer, thalassemia, metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington 's and Alzheimer's).
  • Describe the principles of genetic applied in forensic and criminal investigation and the methods used in the implementation of DNA profiles for individual identification.

On a practical level, the objectives of this course unit are to teach how to plan, execute and interpret DNA amplification methodologies for the detection, identification and analysis of human genes.

  2. Methods in molecular biology
  3. Regulation of human gene expression at the transcriptional level and diseases associated with dysregulation of human gene expression
  4. Principles of medical genetics and population genetics
  5. Molecular Biology of monogenic and polygenic diseases
  6. Genetic susceptibility to diseases
  7. Principles of forensic genetics
  8. Theoretical and practical study of the different DNA profiling methods
