Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
The course aims at the teaching materials used in dentistry.
It is intended that students seize the basics of the microstructure of materials, handling and application, as well as the principles of biocompatibility.
A review of embryonic development phases of the teeth, with emphasis on enamel and dentin will be made. It will be reviewed the structure of the extracted material being presented definitions of materials science.
An introduction to the study of solid, liquid and gaseous and concepts of atomic arrangements, union types, composition and defects that characterize the solid, liquid and gaseous phases will be made.
The physical and mechanical properties of materials will also be addressed.
As final objectives it is intended that students become trained to select, manipulate, evaluate the performance of the material, recognize the limitations of materials, understanding the failure mechanisms of materials.
