Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
The aim of this CU is established a bridge between several disciplines such as Biochemistry and Physiology. The second objective is learning the molecular functioning of human body and prepared the students for next program course oriented to Nutritional Sciences.
It is intended to provide students a critical spirit by a dynamic interdependence between organs and systems.
The CU also has the skills: being able to do analysis and synthesis in the preparation and papers presentation. Being able to work in the group. Being able to understand the functioning of the human body
Syllabus:
- Cell signalling by chemical messengers. Endocrine system.
- Macro and micronutrients. Biochemistry of digestion and absorption of nutrients. Regulatory peptides from gut and pancreas.
- Lipoprotein and metabolism.
- Hypothalamic-pituitary system as a key element of hormonal regulation. Hormones and hypothalamic factors involved. Peptide groups and glycoprotein derived from pro-opiomelanocortin as pituitary hormones. Posterior pituitary: ADH and Oxytocin. Thyroid gland. Relevant aspects of the metabolism of iodine. Suprarenal cortex and medulla: synthesis, actions, metabolism and degradation. Sex glands: their diversity in man and woman.
- Metabolic interrelationship. Overview of intermediary metabolism.
