Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

Strengthen and transform the basic knowledge, with regard to preventive attitude in the scientific area (PPMSOC).
The student should be competent in:

  • Patient education and management of primary oral health care in all stages of life (children, adolescents, adults, elderly) appropriately, effectively and safely emphasizing current concepts of prevention, risk assessment and treatment of oral disease.
  • Knowledge of the etiology and pathological processes of oral diseases.
  • Performing indices charting a record in it soft and hard tissues.
  • Dietary counselling and nutritional education relevant to oral health.
  • Strategies to predict, prevent and correct deficiencies in the control of harmful oral habits.
  • Knowledge about the harmful effects of smoking and how it can help patients to stop using tobacco.
  • To assess salivary function.
  • To identify the location, extent and severity of dental caries and tooth wear.
  • Concepts of minimal intervention.
  • Oral hygiene instructions, application of topical therapy fluoride and fissure sealants.
Syllabus:
  1. Quantification of disease in Community Dentistry.
  2. Epidemiological indices.
  3. Nutrition and Oral Health.
  4. Oral health and behaviour - risk factors, consequences of smoking on oral health.
  5. The role of the dentist in the cessation of smoking.
  6. Oral biofilms: concept, composition and training.
  7. Saliva and plaque, periodontal disease.
  8. Prevention and control of periodontal diseases.
  9. Dental caries: fundamentals of prevention and control, etiology, determinants of caries, caries diagnosis.
  10. Use of Fluoride in Preventive Dentistry. The rational use of fluoride. Fluoride in community programs. History of fluoridation. Metabolism and mechanism of action of fluoride (pre -eruptive and post -eruptive). Acute Toxicity. The use of fluoride in Preventive Dentistry, Methods of fluoride application.
  11. Minimally invasive dentistry.
  12. Fissure sealants.
  13. Oral hygiene: control and elimination of plaque and tartar, manual procedures, use of ultrasonic (indications, advantages and disadvantages). Instrumental subsonic and instrument cleaning and polishing.
