Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Preventing the development of periodontal disease in their future patients.
  • Diagnose and treatment planning of moderate periodontal disease.
  • Diagnose and guide all cases of advanced periodontal disease who require more complex periodontal treatment.
  • Be aware of the importance of Periodontology in Dentistry and Public Health.

Students should have all skills of the "Code of Professional Skills of the Master in Dentistry": generic skills, skills in knowledge and understanding, specific skills, professional ethics and professional attitude.

Syllabus:
  1. The basic sciences related to Periodontology.
  2. The macroscopic and microscopic features oh healthy periodontum.
  3. Etiological factors involved in periodontal diseases.
  4. The plaque formation. Chemical and microbiological composition.
  5. The role of systemic diseases in the etiology of periodontal diseases.
  6. The transition between periodontal health and different periodontal diseases.
  7. Immunology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
  8. The histopathology, clinical and microbiology of periodontal diseases.
  9. The different forms of gingivitis and periodontitis.
  10. Periodontal diseases epidemiology.
  11. The clinical diagnosis and treatments of periodontal diseases and the instruments for this purpose, including periodontal probe.
  12. The interpretation of the normal structures and pathological changes detected on radiographs and its probe.
