Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • Understand the impact of Public Health in Disease Prevention, Health Promotion, and the control of new epidemics.
  • Explain the importance of epidemiological surveillance within the Community.
  • Identify the characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and indications of different epidemiological studies in the area of Laboratory Biomedical Sciences.
  • Explain the importance of Health indicators.
  • Develop skills of recognition and analysis problems including of ethical and social impact.
  • Reflect on the prevention I, II, III, IV along the life cycle.
  • Reflect on the role of Public Health to improve the health of individuals and populations.

  1. Epidemiology and Public Health, state of the art.
  2. The health-disease process.
  3. The prevention I, II, III and IV.
  4. The validity and predictive values of screenings and diagnostic tests.
  5. Epidemiological surveillance.
  6. Sources of data in epidemiology.
  7. Measurement of morbidity and mortality.
  8. Health indicators: interest and application.
  9. Methods in Epidemiology.
  10. The concept of risk and causality.
  11. Occupational Epidemiology and prevention.
  12. Public Health and current health policies.
  13. Epidemiology and the future: new challenges.
