Visa and other Permits
Non-EU higher education students, holders of a residence permit granted by a Member State of the European Union and covered by a European Union or multilateral programme with mobility measures, or by an agreement between two or more higher education institutions, are authorised to enter and remain in national territory to carry out part of their studies, including to carry out a professional activity in accordance with article 97, for a maximum period of 360 days, provided that they communicate this to AIMA, up to 30 days before the start of the mobility period.
The communication must be accompanied by:
- Model 6 form
- Valid passport;
- Copy of the Residence Permit issued by another Member State where you reside, valid for the entire period of stay;
- Health insurance or proof that you are covered by the National Health Service;
- Proof of means of subsistence;
- Proof of admission to a higher education institution under an EU mobility programme or an agreement with the home higher education institution;
- Proof of payment of tuition fees, if applicable.

There is no need to grant a residence permit: if you do not object to the mobility under the terms provided for by law, AIMA issues a declaration attesting that the higher education student is authorized to remain in National Territory and to enjoy the rights provided for in the Law, namely those of article 83 of the REPSAE. The following administrative offences apply: Article 199 of the REPSAE (Failure to present the travel document).
Students coming from EU Member States are allowed in the country upon the presentation of their valid ID card or passport. When they come from EU Member States, their entry in Portugal is not subject to any control. However, the law states that for stays longer than 3 months these students (coming from any EU Member State or Schengen Country) should request to AIMA the card of residence within 3 months after their arrival. All EU citizens are entitled to this card, which is valid for one year and can be extended for equal periods.
