Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
  • To build a taste for research and scientific accuracy.
  • To provide knowledge on the following aspects of TMJ & Orofacial Pain: Nature and evolution of the concept; Role of the physician in the management of TMJ & Orofacial Pain; Classification.
  • Clinical presentation of the different types of TMJ & Orofacial Pain, and treatment basics.
  • Develop study habits, as well as accuracy and precision; technical and professional vocabulary.
  • Stimulate the curiosity and interest so as to have him/her bring forth new ideas in this field.
  • To be able to define TMJ & Orofacial pain.
  • Characterise the type of pain and to understand whether or not it falls within his/her area of activity. Make a differential diagnosis and use the appropriate patient approach, and to treat acute and/or chronic TMJ & Orofacial Pain.
  • Demonstrate both in writing and orally basic knowledge of TMJ & Orofacial Pain.
  • Skills to integrate a multidisciplinary research team in the field of TMJ & Orofacial.

  1. THE NATURE OF TMJ & OROFACIAL PAIN
    Definition.
    Pain as social issue.
    The role of the physician in the management of TMJ & Orofacial Pain.
    Pathways levels of TMJ & Orofacial Pain.
    Anatomical considerations.
    Pain transmission in TMJ & Orofacial Pain.
  2. CHARACTERIZATION OF TMJ & OROFACIAL PAIN
    Neuroanatomy.
    Neurophysiology.
    Relationship with the central nervous system.
    Relationship with supraspinal centers.
  3. TMJ & OROFACIAL PAIN CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS
    Symptomatology and types.
    Categorisation and classification of TMJ & Orofacial Pain according to types and symptoms.
  4. THE APPROACH TO PATIENTS
    Physician / patient relationship.
    Collecting data.
    The importance of making a record of the patient's pain history.
  5. CLINICAL SYNDROMES
    How the various TMJ & Orofacial Pain syndromes work.
    Differential diagnosis.
    Therapeutic management pain.
  6. TMJ & OROFACIAL PAIN - THERAPEUTICAL PRINCIPLES AND THE INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
