Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
Lectures: Provide students with knowledge in the area of Clinical Virology, indispensable to work as a health professional (Community Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy, Clinical Analysis and Pharmaceutical Industry). New areas of knowledge focusing on the use of viruses in different scientific areas will also be discussed.
Lab practice classes: Enable learning methodologies used in the diagnosis and laboratory monitoring of major viral infections. Be able to analyse, validate and interpret results.
The student must be capable of:
- Organizing and planning
- Have the capacity to deal with information (collection, selection and interpretation)
- Have the ability to work and learn through teamwork
- Have the ability to review and recognise ethical and social implications and responsibilities
- Have the ability to adapt to new situations
- Be aware of the Quality issue and be able to relate expertise and possess research skills

- History of Virology. Introduction to Virology.
- Pathogenesis of viral infection. Viruses and the community. Laboratory diagnosis. Prevention and treatment
- Study of the main families that comprise pathogenic viruses to man
- Major syndromes associated with viral infections: Hepatitis. Congenital and perinatal infections. Infections of the nervous system. Infections with cutaneous expression. Infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Eye infections. Oropharyngeal infections. Infections of the respiratory tract. AIDS. Opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. Cancer

Introduction. Safety in the laboratory
Laboratory Diagnosis. Sample collection and transport. Direct and indirect diagnosis
Rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus simplex type 1 and type 2
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D, and Hepatitis E.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Type 2.
