Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:
The student should know:
- Proven pharmacological actions and therapeutic uses of natural origin drugs and herbal products with therapeutic action on the respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous systems, in metabolism, endocrinology, oncology, dermatology and cosmetics
- Side effects, contraindications and drug interactions for public advice on the safety and efficacy of these products in their use as therapeutic agents
- Methods of preparation, storage and standardization of herbal products, preparations and administration forms
- Methods for the identification, analysis, assay, standardization and quality control. The use of the Pharmacopoeia, and the official monographs of plant drugs by applying the pharmacognosy methods described therein for quality control analyzes of raw materials or herbal medicines
- The chemical groups of the active compounds of plant origin
- The methods of research and development of new drugs from natural products
Syllabus:
LECTURES:
- General Concepts of phytotherapy and pharmacognosy
- New natural drugs research. Ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology
- Herbal medicines. Production and preservation. Standardization and quality control.
- Active compounds extraction, analysis and purification methods. Principal chemical groups
- Medicinal herbal products active in the respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, nervous systems and used in endocrinology, oncology, dermatology and as cosmetics
- Efficacy and security of natural drugs
- Secondary effects, toxicity and interactions with other drugs
LAB PRACTICE CLASSES
Use of Pharmacopoeias and monographs of drugs, medicinal herbal and homeopathic products
Characterization and quality control of medicinal aromatic herbs and essential oils
Microchemistry, extraction, quantification and adulteration in essential oils
