Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

This curricular unit has the objective of providing students general concepts about drugs in order to allow a safe use and prescription of these drugs. Develop skills that allow:

  • To recognize potential adverse effects of medications;
  • To recognize situations in which a given drug is indicated or contraindicated;
  • To recognize / avoid drug interactions.

In theoretical-practical classes students should develop skills that allow:

  • To develop research and selection of information, interpretation and synthesis skills;
  • To solve problems and justify their own arguments;
  • To make a lifelong self-directed and autonomous learning ;
  • To develop written and oral communication of scientific content and teamwork;
  • To communicate their knowledge and arguments in a clear and unambiguous way.
Syllabus:
  1. General concepts in pharmacology: General definitions, nomenclature of drugs; Routes of administration; the general cycle of drugs in the body - absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion; characteristics of each stage; pharmacokinetic concepts.
  2. Special populations in pharmacology: Children, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly - physiological changes that affect the pharmacokinetics and drug response.
  3. Basic pharmacokinetic concepts.
  4. Pharmacology of anti-infective drugs: antibacterial, antifungals, antivirals.
  5. Antiseptic and disinfectant drugs.
  6. Local anaesthetics drugs.
In each pharmacological group will be addressed the following aspects:
Main drugs of each group
Mechanism of action
Main pharmacokinetic characteristics
Main indications and contraindications
Adverse effects
Drug Interactions
